Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are documents that describe the physical and health hazards of chemicals or chemical-containing products and are available in Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS), the Universities campus-wide chemical tracking system.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) must be readily accessible to employees during all work shifts when these products are present in the work environment. EHRS maintains a centralized library of SDSs in the online CEMS database for use. CEMS has almost 25,000 SDSs on file or in PDF format. SDSs are added to the central location as employee inventory their chemicals in CEMS.
SDSs can be printed, indexed and stored in binders. The index must be updated, whenever a chemical product is added to or delated from the inventory. The file should be checked annually to verify the all SDSs are present and legible.
Workers must be trained to be able to demonstrate that they can successfully obtain a SDSs, regardless of whether they use CEMS or a paper system.
