Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are intended to inform and educate laboratory personnel about hazards in their workplace and identify special handling procedures, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) or designee to review and approve the SOP(s) ensuring that the protective equipment and procedures outlined are in place. All laboratory personnel must be trained on the SOP(s) applicable to their work before conducting hazardous activitites.
Laboratory Specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Chemical identified as particularly hazardous substances (PHS), High hazard Substances (HHS) or those with unique "high-risk" hazards require a customized, laboratory-specific SOP. Refer to the information below for guidance on what should be included in a SOP.

Chemical Hazards Guidelines
EHRS developed chemical hazard guidelines that summarize general guidance for the safe handling of chemicals in a specific hazard class, such as flammable liquid or oxidizer. These guidelines DO NOT include specific lab procedures, the amount and concentration used, etc. In some cases, the safety guidelines will provide enough information for labs to work safely with all chemicals in that class. In other cases (with Particularly Hazardous Substances) additional lab specific written procedures are required.
